Character designs

Image
These are the four characters that i created which will eventually become a part of a scene. I experimented with different body types as well as playing with their height so that they didn't all have the same aesthetic and i think i pulled this off well. Creating these characters was definitely out of my comfort zone however i had so much fun making them so this is definitely something id do again.

Character design sheets- Florence Nightingale

Image
In order to start working on my character designs, i created some character sheets to show Florence with different expressions, and from different angles. As i am drawing Florence from 3 different ages in her life, i have created 3 character sheets to explore these individually, in depth.    Not only did i focus on poses, expressions and angles, but i also began to look at outfits. I included a full body shot on each sheet in order to see what my characters faces will look like when combined with a traditional outfit from the time period and i feel that this was a really successful idea as it made it a lot easier to replicate and re pose Florence later down the line, without starting from scratch. Colour choices directly referenced from children's clothing during one 1820’s- Lots of light pastel tones in pinks, blues and greens. Using the baby pink and baby blue to reflect her age as these colours are more so linked to younger children.  Colours became more muted in the 1830's

Storyboard plan

Image
These sketches show a little sequence in which Florence falls asleep at her desk, dreaming about becoming a nurse. I went on to use this kind of idea for my final animation, taking inspiration from the 1st and last frames of this storyboard to develop. I wanted to be able to show Florence at a range of ages, in a short series and i feel that i achieved this well in these sketches. I took my sketches into procreate, as seen below, in order to neaten them up a little and perfect my plan. I'm pleased with how this ended up looking as i feel it really clearly shows my ideas, and perhaps as a development i could have added colour in order to make the story come alive a little more.

Developments- ideas for vignette illustrations

Image
Below are a few pencil sketch ideas for vignette illustrations.  Going off my original sketches, i decided to carry on and develop the idea of Florence's younger self looking in the mirror at older Florence in her nursing uniform. I wanted to capture Florence's strong will, showing that even though she was steered away from a career in nursing as a little girl, she still ended up getting to where she wanted and achieving her dreams.  Keeping my palettes consistent, i took colour swatches from my mood boards and character design sheets so that there was a clear link between each part of my design process. Here, i started looking at backgrounds. My vignette felt too plain so i decided to add in a Victorian style pattern to emulate wallpaper behind the mirror. After reflecting on this idea however, i feel that the pattern combined with the colour took the attention away from the vignette itself and made the piece look to busy. I also feel that the brush i used to create the Victor

Final one week project

Image
For the final one week project, i looked at lockdown and the items that became most important to me throughout it. I first chose 6 items to illustrate which i then whittled down into just 2. These items (the phone and glasses) became the starting point for my design. I wanted this illustration to be shown from my birds eye point of view as i was documenting my personal experience of lockdown. I added in the quote to the phone as it felt very relevant to me and filled up the space nicely. It was a refreshing change to work physically in this project as im used to working digitally and although i converted my final design into a digital format, i love the outcome of the hand drawn piece.  Hand drawn piece- Sharpie and fineliner on A4 Digital copy- I imported the hand drawn piece, selected the line art and placed a clipping mask over it in order to get the solid black fill. This was the rough sketch that i made using procreate before i drew the design out using fineliner. Colour variatio

Book design ideas and mock up

Image
/ This video shows a a rough mock up of how l want my folded format to work. Obviously I need to adjust the sizing for each section as the middle panel is too thin here and throws the proportions of the characters off but you get a rough idea of how my design will operate. I’m going to include different facial expressions within the 3 phases of Florence's life that I’m focusing on in order to tell the story a bit more too and I also plan on designing each of the outfits around a different time period in her life in order to communicate her age. As I won’t be able to change her height to convey her age, I’m going to do this through hair styles and as just mentioned, outfits so we can still see the progression.
