Visual Application

These few images are the outcomes of me experimenting with different colour tools on procreate. For this first image, i used the curves bar (as seen on the screenshot below) to boost the warm tones up in order to give an almost sunny feel to my scene.  I found this feature quite hard to use as the slightest movement dramatically altered the outcome of the piece- I feel that this effect would probably work a little better with a smaller range of colours, unlike my piece here.   Juxtaposing the warm tones above, i wanted to create a cooler toned image. Again, using the curves tool, i boosted the cooler tones in order to create a more gloomy and wintry feel to the scene. I feel that this would have been more successful on JUST the background rather than on the characters too, so that's definitely something to keep in mind for future projects.   Above, are some videos showing my final folded format, and its front cover.  To begin the construction of my book, i marked up every image against the guidelines that i created on my digital copies (refer to folded formats development blog) in order to make sure that every section was equal. I used a craft knife for this to ensure a close cut.  After i had all of my pieces cut, i arranged them into their corresponding pages and stacked them up in my desired order. I chose not to order them in any specific way as the whole idea of the book is that it is a mix and match, so i alternated the pages between Florence's different ages. After this, i punched holes through each of the panels and attached little metal rings to bind each section together. This is one area that i could have improved upon- The rings held the sections together however they were very flimsy which allowed the sections to splay out so if i were to do this again i would have considered book binding instead of this

One point perspective- Gives the illusion of the image vanishing into one point in the distance.  Two point perspective-  Three point perspective-  

In order to create my final scene, i made separate elements first so that i could move them round accordingly- I kept mine simple as to not over crowd the scene. Simple scene, no characters-  To create depth, i experimented with changing the scale and positions of my elements- i bought some of my characters forwards and enlarged them so that they looked closer to us, and sunk some of them back so that they looked far away, giving the illusion of a large middle ground which creates depth. Another example- Using the same layout as seen above, i changed the horizon line to alter the view point of the scene. Dragging the horizon line towards the bottom of the canvas created a more shallow background, giving the illusion that we are closer to the floor. I enlarged my characters and positioned them in a way which made them look taller, almost as if they're looming over you.  I did the opposite on this one, dragging the horizon line up to create an almost birds eye view perspective .   As i am approaching the end of my project and look towards constructing my folded format, i have begun creating my characters to feature in the book. I went with 6 images in the end, which meant that there 2 designs from each of Florence's stages in life.  To create the split element to my folded format, I used this template to ensure that when i constructed my book and each section was turned, they matched up and created a new character. I used different expressions on the top third to convey Florence's different emotions throughout her ages, and different outfits in the last two thirds to show how the fashion changed as she aged.  / I decided I wanted to swap out the image above, for the one I created below- an integral part to Florence's story, is the way that she rejected all societal norms- one of those being the rejection of her arranged marriage at 17. This is the reference photo that i used for my paintings. I mapped out the middle, fore, and backgrounds so that it would be easier to put my tones in when painting. I created this piece using the theory that the values in the image get lighter as they reach the background. I kept the background scale very short with only three values and had the foreground section with the biggest range. I really liked this method of painting- making the background the lightest values gave an almost foggy effect to the painting as well as giving it depth which i really like. I did however, struggle to get all of the detail in on the background with such a small range of tones so this is perhaps something i could experiment with moving forward.   For this painting, i kept the same range of values (smaller amount in the back, more towards the front) but changed the values within them.
