Shadows

Image
During this session, we focused on shadows, looking at how different ranges of lighting effects the shades and the colours within our work. Putting this idea into play, i created the piece below. I took the reference photo and sampled 9 different shades from it which allowed me to construct my copied image as the shades ranged from the darkest darks to the lightest highlights. Using these, i mapped out all of the areas without using any line art in order to show which aspects were shadowed, which were highlighted and which sat in the middle ground.  I chose to use a brush with a low opacity to do so as i felt the layering of colours created a much more realistic effect. I put down some lighter tones first especially seen on the buildings, then over lapped a darker tone of the same hue in order to build the colour up yet leave some of the highlights peeking through. This was a really fun and interesting experiment as it allowed me to see the image for its tones, rather than the lines

One day project No2

For the 2nd one week project, i was challenged with creating artwork inspired by songs. I chose three of my own songs and three off of the pre selected playlist that was compiled for us. I decided to use only indian ink and fineliner for my first designs as this was available to me at the time plus allowed me to expand on my media choices after typically working digitally. The first set of illustrations were quick responses to the music as i listened, thinking about the emotions and movement of the music. One at a time- unknown mortal orchestra Champagne supernova- oasis Let’s dance- David bowie Bohemian like you- The dandy Warhol’s  Semi charmed life- Third eye blind Everything I wanted- Billie Eilish  When refining my ideas, i decided to go back to working digitally and i created these collages. I scanned in a few of my ink patters from the inital image making, using these as backgrounds and then i added in hand written typography and drawn elements aswell as photos in order to merg

Character design blobs

Image
In order to start my character design brief, i undertook the task of developing characters based off of ink blobs. This was such a beneficial task to me as it really allowed me to loosen up and look at these images in an abstract way in order to pull creative designs out of them.  Using the negative space on this blob, i created this puffer fish/coral design. Using the negative space really trained my eyes to look for something a little less obvious like i normally would and to dig a little deeper into my imagination in order to construct an image.  Using the interior of the blob this time, i created this running dog. This is my favourite design as it was so much fun to depict the movement as it felt really fluid and natural once i saw the design and ran with it. This definitely pushed my out of my comfort zone as animals arent something that i usually draw.  Moving over towards a human character, i created this witch design. Although i saw the pose straight away when looking at this b

One day project No1

For this one week project, i was challenged with creating an illustration depicting how to make my favourite meal. I decided to go with a soup recipe and below shows the process of executing my ideas.    Original sketch done on A3 paper in fineliner    More refined sketch after thinking through my design further and experimenting with placement and typography.   Colour rough to see how the palette worked throughout the whole piece   Final outcome- I scanned my first design into procreate and traced it digitally in order to then add colour using a pencil brush on the app. I used the pencil because i wanted to add a hand drawn texture back into my work as this was eliminated when i turned my design digital. Overall i really like how this came out- i love the colour palette and i think the composition works well, the only thing i would change is maybe adding in a few more labels in order to explain the process more.

Testing different styles

Image
As I began this project, i really wanted to look at art that inspires me so i created these mood boards to refer back to when designing. I looked to a range of illustrators with very different styles in order to give myself a big range of inspiration, whether it be pattern design, medias or composition.  , These images are the start of my experimentation. Having not done character design before, i didnt have a pre existing style to jump in with so i wanted to scope out my options in order to see what really jumped out at me.    I really like this style below as the lines have energy and i can create a range of emotions with very paired back features. Similar to how i have worked before, this style felt comfortable to me and this is most likely what ill carry forward into this project however im interested to see how this evolves.

Environments

Image
These images above give a rough idea of the types of surroundings Florence would be experiencing. With photography not being very advanced at this point, its hard to know exactly what things would have looked like, but we can get a basic picture. As we can see, some photos show the hospitals which she worked at and they look extremely bare but very cramped. We can also see what the soldiers would have looked like which will come in handy when adding in background characters, and the outside view of the buildings gives a good indication if the structural trends at the time.

First designs

Above, are just a few of my very first sketches that i made whilst i was getting used to drawing Florence, and deciding on a style.

Fashion based moodboards

1820s Fashion Beginning to gather inspiration for my character designs, i looked into the fashion from the 1800's with the board above specifically featuring designs from the 1820's. I wanted to look into typical women's attire to get a feel for the silhouettes and colours that were relevant at the time as these will massively influence my choices as i progress with my character design. I created a little swatch of colours that re occured throughout the era in order for me to incorporate these into more finalised pieces down the line. Although Florence was very young during this period, i wanted to look at how the style changed throughout her lifetime and how this eventually filtered in to becoming part of her nursing uniform. 1830's fashion  A little more flamboyant than the 1820's, the 1830's showcased feminine off the shoulder cuts with pastel palettes and lots of adornments. I really want to take inspiration from this type of palette as there are some real
